The piping plover is a small shorebird that is considered stable yet vulnerable in Indiana.  There are between 3,000 and 10,000 individuals in North America.  Their habitat consists of sandy beaches, especially where grassy patches are found.  They are also present in shallow lakes, ponds, and rivers.  Their breeding grounds include sandy beaches and dunes.  Their threats are human disturbance, habitat transformation, predation, pollution, and unsustainable use through hunting.  One way to protect populations of piping plover is to not disturb nesting grounds creating great potential for growth of the populations.
