Pink Mucket, Lampsilis abrupta

The pink mucket is a federally endangered mussel.  The shell is round, solid and inflated.  The anterior end is rounded and the posterior end is pointed in males and truncated in females.  The umbos are turned forward and elevated above the hinge line.  The beak sculpture, if visible, is made of three or four double-looped ridges.  The shell is smooth, yellow or yellowish green and rayless or with faint green rays.  The length of the shell can be up to four inches.  The pseudocardinal teeth of the mucket are triangular and thick and the lateral teeth are short, heavy, and thick.  The beak cavity is deep and the nacre is pink or white.  The pink mucket is found on the lower Mississippi and Ohio rivers and their larger tributaries in gravel or sand.
