Orange-Foot
Pimpleback, Plethobasus
cooperianus
photo courtesy of USFWS The pimpleback is a round freshwater mussel, which has a distinctive orange foot. It is found in large rivers in sand, gravel, and cobblestone. They are also present in steady currents. There are an estimated 1,000 to 3,000 individuals in the Midwestern United States. This species of mussel is in decline and exists only in small populations. Their endangerment is due to pollution and unsustainable use by natural predators. One way to protect the orange-foot pimpleback include steps taken to reduce water pollution.
