Mitchell’s Satyr Butterfly, Neonympha mitchellii mitchellii

This butterfly listed temporarily as endangered on an emergency basis on June 25, 1991, to due threat posed by over-collection. The butterfly received long-term protection on May 20, 1992.  As of July 1995, only five apparently viable populations remain range wide in Indiana and Michigan.  At the time of this listing, two populations existed in Indiana.  Habitat loss is a major factor in the decline of this butterfly.   In an attempt to strengthen the Indiana population, completed efforts were made to reintroduce the butterfly to a nearby property owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC).
