Heart-Leaved Plantain, Plantago cordata

The heart-leaved plaintain is a semi-aquatic perennial, which occurs individually or in loose clusters.  It has very unique heart-shaped leaves, which are noticeable only in the summer.  The leaf shape transforms morphologically due to the seasonal change from spatulate to shape.  This plantain is in a great decline in Indiana.  It is found in rocky terrain, clear streams, springs, and moist depressions in deciduous forests and in freshwater tidal flats.  This plant is very sensitive to water quality changes due to pollution.
