Harlequin darter, Etheostoma histrio

The harlequin darter is a small fish that is critically imperiled in Indiana while it has a distribution across the Midwest and Southern U.S. it is generally uncommon.  This darter resides in freshwater creeks and medium sized rivers.  In Indiana, the harlequin darter will most likely be found in riffles with a coarse gravel bottom.  Major threats for this darter and others are pollution and habitat modification.
