Habitats We have chosen to divide Indiana into eight major regions based on criteria established by A. Lindsay et al. in the 1969 publication of Natural Areas in Indiana and Their Preservation. The eight general divisions have been designated based on both geological and biological criteria. More specifically, major floral and faunal distributions and major sediment types were all considered before a distinction was made. These boundaries have been artificially placed to help with general classifications and it is important to understand that transitional areas exist between each of the adjacent regions. Both pre-settlement and current floral conditions are mentioned, as well as unique features that may exist in the region. Protected and preserved areas under each division are also included to give specific information on reasonably undisturbed habitat plots.
