Cobble
Stone Tiger Beetle, Cicindela
maginepennis
This beetle is
vulnerable in the state of Indiana. The
cobble stone tiger beetle is a brightly colored beetle that lives in
prairies, sandy communities characterized by high erosion and few plants.
These beetles are unique because they are one of the few species
that are capable of achieving fast flight.
They are predators, feeding mainly on flies and ants.
The cobble stone tiger beetle is an effective predator of crop
destroying insects. The pesticides used by farmers to eliminate the harmful
insects also harms the tiger beetles. The cobble stone tiger beetle is
endangered because of a loss of habitat and exposure to pesticides.
