Appalachian
bugbane, Cimicifuga
rubifolia
The Appalachian
bugbane is a tall, slender, shade-loving perennial herb that is critically
imperiled in Indiana. The
stem is maroon-tinted and its dark green and smooth leaves resemble those
of a red maple. It is only
present in one county in Indiana (Posey County, at the southwestern tip of
the state). The bugbane is
found at the base of north facing slopes where conditions are cool and
moist. Due to its need for shade, a major threat is the destruction
of forest canopy by logging and other human means. This also leads to erosion.
